Highlights from the 2007 Two-Day Clinic!
On June 3-4, kayaking participants enjoyed the great adventure of kayaking! Working with our new business partner, Erie Canal Boat Company, and its owner, Peter Abele, we conducted a session in a pool and the second session on the Erie Canal.
Nine participants (almost all had never kayaked previously!) met at the Webster Aquatics Center on Friday evening. Taking time to first get acquainted with the boats, any necessary adaptations were made at that time. Then, each person entered the water, practiced turning from face down to face up with a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) on (to simulate a “wet exit” from the kayak). Once that was completed, participants had time to begin learning to paddle the boat in the pool, working on forward, back, sweep (turning), and stopping strokes with the paddle.
Day 2 found these participants on the Erie Canal in Fairport, eager to get out on the water 'for real.' And they did just that! Taking the first minutes to put the paddles strokes of the previous evening to practice in “real” water, people soon were ready to go upstream for an hour’s paddle before turning back and paddling with the current to the dock. Take a look at some of the pictures!
