Outdoor Exposure Rock Climbing Open House

On Sunday, October 23, 2005, Outdoor Exposure had its official beginnings at Rock Ventures on University Avenue. This first Open House found about 10 interested people checking out the rock climbing gym’s facility, talking with the owner, Kent Winchester, and filling out registration materials. Anita O’Brien and Mary Anne Price, Outdoor Exposure’s facilitators, gave an overview of the program and then spoke about details of the Rock Climbing course. And then, potential participants had the chance to put on the gear and try their hand at climbing! Participants loved this opportunity to see what it was really like to climb vertically, with a rope attached! Also noted was how the group immediately began supporting each climber, calling out encouragement and affirmations. This aspect of the Outdoor Exposure courses is a key element to the design of the project: team building, communication skills, and personal growth and development. The night was a success – those who came, signed up. Those who climbed were ready for more! The next event was held on the following Sunday.

Outdoor Exposure, The Integrated Disability Adventure Program, is a new program offered by CDR that will provide three years of rotating courses: Rock climbing, scuba diving, horseback riding, and kayaking. A year round aquatics program will also be offered. Anyone interested in participating should contact us at 546-7510!
