April ADAPT Challenge!
Chris Hilderbrandt Members of Rochester ADAPT will be traveling to Washington, DC, on April 26th for a week of activism for disability rights. As an incentive for participating in the “Fun Run” fundraiser, CDR’s Director of Advocacy, Chris Hilderbrant, has pledged to let his head be shaved if the group raises over $5,000.

Silent Auction Photo On March 28, 2008 The Nuptial Network of Rochester held a silent auction at Shadow Lake Golf and Tennis Club to benefit the Center for Disability Rights. The event was attended by many supports of CDR, local celebrities and brides and grooms to be. Everyone that attended had a fun time and enjoyed food, bidding on auction items and live entertainment. Training The Center for Disability Rights was awarded funding through the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council to conduct regional trainings for Independent Living Centers, NYS Ombudsman, Regional Resource Development Centers and the NYS Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

RGRTA Protest On August 2, 2007, the RGRTA Board voted to go ahead with plans to expand Lift Line service for an average cost of $8.50 for a one way ride! The Center for Disability Rights has released its analysis and response to New York State Governor Eliot
Spitzer's proposed 2007-2008 Executive Budget.
While CDR praises the Governor for several initiatives to
shift long term care Medicaid spending away from costly institutions and into community-based settings, several
significant problems were also recognized. All-in-all, however, this budget is acknowledged to be much better

The first of the 2007 Conferences will be held in Rochester, NY, March 30th to April 1st. ESAD has been an
affiliate member of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) since 1941. Each organization promotes, protects,
and preserves the rights and quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the USA. The Conference will
have interesting Workshops and The Pageant Competition. Topics include: Emergency Preparedness; Government
Council for the Deaf; Licensure for Interpreters in NY; The Current State of Captioning on TV and in the Movies.

PROVING A POINT!
Mayor Duffy struggles to move his wheelchair on a snow packed sidewalk, eventually having to move into the street. Rochester's Mayor and His Staff Learn That Wheelchairs and Snow Don't Mix!
Last year, City of Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy promised the Disability Community that he would
personally get into a wheelchair and travel along Rochester's snowy sidewalks
in order to learn how
the city might better serve the needs of the disabled. On February 7, 2007, Disability Rights Advocates
held the Mayor to his promise.
With media cameras rolling and reporters ready, see how the Mayor
and his staff got schooled
with some hands-on (or in this case, "wheels-on"), real-life education!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
2006 Holiday Celebration. A Very Festive Holiday Celebration!
On Friday December 15, 2006, CDR held its Annual Holiday Celebration at the Holiday Inn on
Brooks Avenue next to the airport. This fabulous night was attended by many children and adults all
bedecked in Holiday Fashion. Spirits were high and people enjoyed great food, songs, games,
toys, and a visit from Santa, as well as a raffle that raised a record amount for CDR's

2006 Disability Candidate Forum. CDR/RCIL Candidate Forum on Disability, October 24, 2006
Approximately 75 people assembled for the Center for Disability Rights/Regional Center for
Independent Living Annual Candidate Forum on Disability
at the Center for Disability Rights.
Representatives for various candidates spoke and answered questions, and then mingled with those
in attendence to further explain their platforms and to address individual concerns.
A sign language interpreter and accessible materials were provided.

On September 22, 2006, Vice President Dick Cheney attended a fundraiser at the Rochester Riverside Convention
Center on behalf of Congressman Randy Kuhl. While Kuhl's campaign collected $150 for everyone who attended
the dinner, with an additional $1,500 per person being paid by everyone who wanted their picture taken with the
Vice President, ADAPT was there to insist that Kuhl stop ignoring the voice of the disabled by his refusal to
sign on as a cosponsor of MiCASSA. Kuhl must commit both now and in the future to FREE OUR PEOPLE!

ADAPT converges on the Nation's Capitol. ADAPT Converges On Washington, DC, September 2006
Rochester ADAPT joined National ADAPT in Washington, DC to lift up the voices of the disabled. Descending
upon the annual conference of the Public Housing Authority Director's Association (PHADA), ADAPT demanded
a meeting with its Executive Director. ADAPT also met with representatives from the Conference of Catholic
Bishops, secured a future meeting with the American Association of Health Plans, marched on Capitol Hill, met
with representatives from HUD, and crammed themselves into the Republican National Committee Headquarters.

City of Albany, New York. To support "Not Dead Yet", a busload of Rochester

traveled to the state's capital to make their voices heard at the Alden March
Bioethics Conference
being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. They were joined by others

  497 State Street, Rochester, NY, Atrium and Sign showing 'The Center For Disability Rights, Inc' and 'Regional Center for Independent Living' during the Grand Opening Celebration. The Center For Disability Rights Celebrates Its New Building
CDR held the Grand Opening and Dedication of their new home on June 14, 2006. CDR Board President Robert DeFelice acknowledged the unification of the Disability Rights Services Community through the new affiliation of CDR and the Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL), who will also be sharing the building. Inspirational messages were given by CDR's Executive Director, Bruce Darling, along with Chris Hilderbrant, Director of Advocacy, and City of Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy, who praised CDR for its efforts.

ADAPT in Nashville!
2006 March ADAPT Nashville Trip. ADAPT in Nashville, Tennessee!
On Friday, March 17, 2006, 31 people boarded a bus at the Center for Disability Rights in Rochester, NY,
and headed for Nashville. Many ADAPT members will be providing testimony about how the institutional bias
of long-term care
has affected their lives. Several dozen ADAPTers will tell their own stories of how they
escaped from an institution in order to live life in the community. Check the Calendar for information
regarding CDR's winter BBQ on March 30th and the ADAPT meeting on April 6th to hear stories from the trip.
